Abstract:
Abstract Objective: To develop alternative prediction equations that could predict knee isokinetic strength based on anthropometric characteristics for the non-athlete populations. Method: Three hundred and two healthy nonathletic (160 females, 142 males) between the ages of 10 and 79 years underwent knee isokinetic testing at 60°/s. A subset of 40 subjects was randomly selected for retesting to assess the reliability of the isokinetic instrument. Stepwise regression was used to analyze the relationship between knee strength and variables such as age, gender, height, and weight, establishing multiple linear regression equations for peak torque (PT). A separate group of 70 subjects (average age 32.11±10.86 years) were used to validate predictive equations. The established predictive equations were compared with those established by Gross et al.,and Bland-Altman plots were constructed to assess the consistency between the predicted values of the equations and the actual measurements. Result: The instrument used demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC>0.90,P<0.001). There were significant relationships between the PT values for the knee extensor and flexor muscles and age, gender, height, and weight (Extension PT: Adjusted R2=0.775, P<0.001; Flexion PT: Adjusted R2=0.684, P<0.001). Furthermore, the equations had higher predictive accuracy, whereas Gross et al.'s equations significantly underestimated the predicted extensor PT values and overestimated the flexor PT values. Conclusion: This study provided more accurate prediction equations for knee isokinetic strength in a non-athlete population.
